Many years ago, I lived and worked in Ipswich, Suffolk. While there I spent happy hours searching the local second-hand shops for kitchenware and items of furniture. On one occasion, my local shop had a selection of old enamel signs Amongst them was this village sign dating from the earlier days of motoring. Issued by the Automobile Association, these signs gave the name of the village where they were situated, mileage to nearby settlements and distance from London. They promoted road safety and, of course, acted as an advertisement for themselves.
These signs were quite numerous between the wars, though I expect many were removed for security reasons during WWII. A few remain in their original position.
I bought this sign remembering a long cycle trip including a visit to Clare on the way. Since it featured a slow puncture as well, it remained in the memory for good reason.
I feel it is now time for things to move on. I would like very much for the sign to return to its village, to fill in a part of its history.
